Dealing with bathroom plumbing is never an easy job, but it is something we all have dealt with at some point in our lives.
If you consider yourself a handyman or handywoman, you have probably done some of the repairings yourself and called a plumber only for the bigger issues.
Regardless, more knowledge on this subject can’t hurt, and some of these bathroom plumbing tips may even help you prevent major plumbing issues.
Here are some of the most important bathroom plumbing tips that you need to know:
1. Keep sewer drain clear at all times
Make sure that your main sewer drain is always clear and available and not covered or restricted with debris.
This way in case of emergencies you will be able to act quickly and efficiently and save money down the road.
2. Never flush your trash
Yes, some people do dispose of small amounts of trash into their toilets.
Your toilet is only meant for disposal of waste and toilet paper.
3. Use drain covers to avoid and prevent major clogging
Using drain covers will help filter out loose hair, soap scum, toothpaste caps etc. from passing through into your bathroom pipes.
4. Stay away from using chemicals for unclogging
Instead, use half a cup of baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar and 4 cups of hot (not boiling hot) water to unclog your bathroom sink.
For the toilet or shower, you can use a standard plunger.
If it is a harder object like a toy that is being stuck in the drains, shut off the water and use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the clog.
For even more plumbing advice, contact your local plumbing company.
5. Know where and how old your pipes are
If your house was built before 1970, you will want to check if your pipes have been replaced at some point.
If they are made of lead, steel, iron, or polybutylene, which are all prone to corrosion, replacing them is crucial in order to avoid any potentially costly issues.
6. Showerhead still dripping?
In most cases, if your showerhead is dripping, the threaded tape is not working properly and the threads are probably not connected tightly.
To fix this, all you need to do is unscrew the showerhead, and in a clockwise direction, wrap a new layer of tape and re-attach it to stop the drip.
7. Too-tight is not-right
Don’t close the tap to your sink too tightly because this can and will cause the seal to wear out faster.
Same goes when doing the repairs, don’t overtight your pipes.
8. How’s your water pressure in the bathroom?
If your water pressure is down, you probably have an aerator that needs to be cleaned.
It may have collected some lime buildup and sediment which have blocked pipe openings.
To solve this issue, unscrew and remove the aerator and then soak it in vinegar nd wash it with dish soap and hot water afterward.
If it can’t be removed, add vinegar on an old toothbrush and scrub the sediment to clear the aerator holes.
9. If your toilet is running, don’t run after it
Several things may be the issue with a constantly running toilet.
First, stop the water flow by closing the toilet’s water supply valve, hen open the toil tank.
Check the chain to see whether it is broken or slipped out and needs to be readjusted.
Then see whether the arm that is holding up the chain is intact or broken.
If these are the issues, replace them with new parts, but if it is not the issue, you’ll want to flush the toilet and wait for the water to be cleared out, then take a look at the flapper.
Is it worn out or needs replacement? If so, this can also be found at your local hardware store.
